Alexandria Institute's Greek literature and culture course

Aimed at participants from level B1 upwards that would like to become familiar with the most representative works of Modern Greek literature and culture. A selection of literary texts and works of art is presented within a historical and cultural context and are used as a basis for study and discussion.

The course deals with the principal literary periods. Students are given the opportunity to delve deeper into the Greek language and culture by commenting on the language linguistically processing the texts and commenting on them.

The curriculum can be arranged in a way that suits the students’ needs and preferences. For instance, priority can be given to the works of one writer, one specific book, or a certain literary era or genre, e.g. poetry, short stories or novels.

Students particularly keen on literature, arts, history and traditions, who wish to either familiarize themselves with Greek culture or explore it more exhaustively, will certainly find this specific course ideal.

Why this summer at Volissos (Chios island)?

Something different is happening this summer in Chios, in Volissos. From 5 to 10 August we will organize our literature workshop, during which we will read a book by the author Yannis Makridakis.

Yannis lives in Volissos. He has been cultivating the land and words for years with the same love.
His every work is a juicy fruit that speaks about man’s relationship with the earth and the environment, about diversity, the economic crisis, the refugee crisis, climate change, the concept of “national” identity, etc.

In his latest books he is concerned with the choices we make in our lives, the Fate and the Chaos that governs us, the Chaos that we ultimately control to some extent.

In almost most of the books the plot is set, though not always named, on our favorite island, Chios. It is the finite place and setting where the protagonists act and experience universal experiences.

The workshop will be prepared and presented by the philologist Andreas Tselikas.

During the literature workshop we will have the pleasure of meeting and talking to the author himself.

We will discuss not only his literary work but also our relationship with the environment, nature, the earth and how all these are connected to literature.

We will also visit with him a field of mastic trees that he cultivates and he will talk to us about the culture that mastic cultivation has carried through the centuries.

This workshop takes place in the author’s literary universe by the sea, among orchards, fields, fruits of the earth and the spirit. It is not only for those who read Greek literature. But also to all those who want to get in touch with nature, to discuss the relationship between literature and the cultivation of the earth, the impact of our choices, how people’s lives are connected.

We share ideas and reflections with students from all over the world about the waste of our planet’s natural resources and how we can (?) get out of this destructive impasse.
If this summer you want to have a different literary experience, we are waiting for you with pleasure at the Modern Greek literature workshop in Volissos, Chios.

Our courses include:

In case attendance is greater than expected, further excursions and tour guides may be added. The original itinerary may have to be modified, in response to unexpected weather conditions or in function of local events. A minimum attendance of three students is required for the cultural and social activities to take place.
